Necktie
Many Muslims (especially of the sub-continent) are of the opinion that “necktie” is prohibited in Islam. In fact there are many Fatwas issued, declaring necktie to be ‘haraam’.
Generally two reasons are given when enquired as to why is necktie prohibited. They say: (1) it is a religious (or specific) dress of the Christians, and/or (2) it represents Cross (religious symbol of the Christians).
Let us analyze both these reasons:
Reason (1) - It is a religious/specific dress of the Christians:
There is not a single authentic proof to support this claim, NOT A SINGLE. As per Encyclopedia Wikipedia: ‘The history of neckwear can be traced back to China in the tomb of The first Emperor of china, Ch’in Shi Huang-Ti. All of the terracotta warriors uncovered wore neckerchiefs. The modern necktie however, can be traced back to the Thirty Year War, which was fought from 1618 to 1648. There were many Croatian horsemen fighting for the French and they wore small, knotted neckerchiefs. That started a fashion craze in Europe where both men and women wore pieces of fabric around their necks. In the late seventeenth century, the men wore lace cravats that took a large amount of time and effort to arrange. These cravats were often tied in place by cravat strings, arranged neatly and tied in a bow.’
The origin of necktie has nothing to do with Christians or Christianity!
Reason (2) – It resembles a Cross:
It is one of the most foolish argument that one can give. If I wear a gown or a kurta or even a shirt and stand with my hands stretched out, then it will resemble more like a cross than a necktie! Islam does not work on such logics!
I hope that after reading this article the opinions might change for better.
