Farewell Sermon of Prophet Muhammad (Prayers & Peace be upon him)

Prophet Muhammad (Prayers & Peace be upon him) in his only pilgrimage, at the age of 63, mounted on his she-camel, addresses a gathering of almost 120,000 Muslims on Mt. Rahmah at Arafah on 9th Dhulhijjah on the year 10 Hijrah.

The speech most memorable in the history of Islam, is a vital document known as Khutbah al-Wada – the farewell address also referred as Khutbah at-Tabligh (Proclamation of address).

Praising & thanking ALLAAH, the Prophet (Prayers & Peace be upon him) said:-

  • O’ people, listen to my words carefully for I know not whether I would meet you again on such an occasion
  • O’ people, just as you regard this month, this day, this city sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Remember that you will indeed appear before ALLAAH and answer for your actions
  • Return the things kept with you as a trust (Amanah) to their rightful owners. All dues of interest shall be cancelled and you will have onlyyour capital back; ALLAAH has forbidden interest, and I cancel the dues of interest payable to my uncle Abbas bin Abdul Muthalib
  • O’ people, your wives have a certain right over you and you have certain rights over them. Treat them well and be kind to them, for they are your partners and commited helpers
  • Beware of Shaitan, he is desperate to divert you from the worship of ALLAAH, so beware of him in matters of your religion
  • O’ people, listen carefully! All the believers are bothers. You are not allowed to take things belonging to another Muslim unless he gives it to you willingly
  • O’ people, none is higher than the other unless he is higher in obedience to ALLAAH. No Arab is any superior to a non-Arab in piety
  • O’ people, reflect of my words, I leave behind me two things, THE QUR’AN AND MY SUNNAH (HADITH), and if you follow these, you will not fail
  • Listen to me carefully, Worship ALLAAH and offer prayer (Salat), observe fast (Saum) in the mouth of Ramadhan and pay alms (Zakah)
  • O’ people, be mindful of those who work under you. Feed and clothe them as you feed and clothe yourselves
  • O’ people, no prophet or messenger will come after me and no new faith will emerge
  • All those who listen to me shall pass on my word to others and those to others again

Prophet Muhammad (Prayers & Peace be upon him) then faced the heavens and asked, ”Have I conveyed the message of ALLAAH to you, O’ people?” The audience answered in one voice, “Yes, you have, ALLAAH is the witness.”
